Hildesheim Cathedral Museum is Reopening
The Hildesheim Cathedral Museum, which has been closed for around five years for the renovation of the episcopal church, will reopen on Saturday 18 April.
For the first time after the expansion and renovation, the Cathedral Museum will be open to visitors from Saturday 18 April. To mark the reopening, admission shall be free on this day as well as on Sunday 19 April. The opening hours are from 10.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday and from 12 noon to 5.00pm on Sunday.
The renovation and new construction of the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum cost approx. 10.4 million euros, with the Diocese Hildesheim assuming costs of 4.65 million euros. 1 million euros came from the Federal Government and 3.5 million euros from the European Union. The Foundation of Lower Saxony pitched into the costs with 650,000 euros and the Klosterkammer Hannover with 350,000 euros. The Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the Sparkasse Hildesheim each made financial contributions of 125,000 euros.
Until its closure, the Cathedral Museum was housed in the cathedral's chapter house above the sacristy as well as in the adjacent knights' hall. Over the course of the renovation, the museum has been expanded to the profaned St. Anthony's Church, other rooms belonging to the cathedral's ensemble of buildings as well as to a new building.
The Hildesheim Cathedral Museum harbours the cathedral treasury – one of the most important and best-preserved medieval treasure collections in the world. Together with the cathedral itself, it makes up part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Works of art from contemporary artists are now also being showcased for the first time in a much larger exhibition space.
